Polish partnerships proving themselves the best
Two Polish teams paved their way through the Pool Play with impeccable records at the A1 Major Klagenfurt on Friday morning.
Losiak/Bryl and Fijalek/Prudel won all three of their matches in their pools to secure a spot in the last 16 – and no other nation in the men’s tournament can claim that feat. It was a great way to banish the disappointment for fellow Poles Kadziola/Szalankiewicz, the third Polish team in the main draw yesterday, following their unfortunate injury.
Number two seeds Brouwer/Meeuwsen breezed into the last 16 as they silenced the crowd on Center Court against Austrians Huber/Seidl.
It was a mixed morning for the home beach fans who packed the stadium as Klagenfurt waved goodbye to the darlings of the court, Doppler/Horst, who lost their final pool match and made a shock exit from the competition.
But those frowns were turned upside down by young Austrian duo Ermacora/Pristauz-Telsnigg, as they scraped heroically through to the elimination round in grandstand fashion in one of the closest pools in Swatch Major Series history.
Even though they lost to Binstock/Schachter it was the Austrians who advanced to the Pool Play instead! The difference in point ratio was 0.005! Basically a solitary point was the difference! That’s how tight the margins are in this game we love so much!
The full draw for the men’s elimination round will soon be online before the first round kicks off later this afternoon following the women’s quarterfinal clashes – which there are only three following the withdrawal of Czech girls Slukova/Hermannová due to injury.
